Becoming at the Mikveh

April 23, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Who are we becoming? Our identities are an ever changing story that shifts over time. Jewish rituals, like mikveh, offer a way to affirm who we are on that journey. As we struggle to make sense of the world around us in these uncertain times, what is the impact on our individual identity? Join Rising Tide and widely-published essayist and poet, literary scholar, professor, and nationally-recognized speaker on transgender issues, Joy Ladin, Ph.D., for a discussion on the way identities are formed and explore how mikveh can be a place for becoming who we are. Moderated by Rabbi Becky Silverstein.

Presenter

Joy Ladin is a professor and chair of English at Yeshiva University’s Stern College for Women. She is the first openly transgender employee of an Orthodox institution. Her memoir, Through the Door of Life: A Jewish Journey Between Genders, was a finalist for a 2012 National Jewish Book Award. Her most recent work, The Soul of the Stranger: Reading God and Torah from a Transgender Perspective, was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award and a Triangle Award. In 2012 she was the first openly transgender person named to the Forward 50 list of influential or courageous American Jews.
